The history of Rockland Breakwater dates back to the 1820s, when local merchants started to develop the area for shipping purposes. However, it wasn’t until the 1840s that the breakwater was constructed in order to provide a protected harbor for boats and ships. The construction of the breakwater was a challenging task and took several decades to complete due to its location in Penobscot Bay and the varying weather conditions. In 1899, a lighthouse was built on the breakwater to help guide ships safely into the harbor. Today, the breakwater is still in use and the lighthouse is a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike.
